The prophecy of Obadiah

This prophetic book's focal point is on the malicious behavior of Edom
against Judah during the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BCE.
First we need to understand the relationship between God, Israel, and Edom. Edomites are kin to the Israelites (Chapter 1:10) via Esau, the brother of Jacob (Genesis 25:30, Deuteronomy 2:4 & 8). Hate between the two nations (Genesis 25:23) was unacceptable by God (Leviticus 19:17 and Deuteronomy 23:7).  For it is impossible to have love for the unseen while possessing hate or dislike for the visible (1st John 4:20). It was a fiat, the Edomites weren't in practice of keeping. But do God Himself hate Esau (Malachi 1:30)?

Edom's location was a mountainous territory (Chapter 1:3 & 9). It gave them a sense of arrogant security (Chapter 1:3). In verse three when God
speaks of Edom dwellings in the "cleft of the rock", the informed reader
understood, the Hebrew word for "cliff/rock", sela, shared the same name
of an important city of Edom. The pun was intended to address the two-fold layers of its haughtiness. The vocalization of such "Should your eyrie
be lodged among stars".....speaks on the consideration of scaling into
the celestial realm (Chapter 1:4). The pride of ascension was in his
heart (Chapter 1:4)...The same sin of satan:

Isaiah 14:

13 You said in your heart,
    “I will ascend to the heavens;
I will raise my throne
    above the stars of God;
I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,

14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;
I will make myself like the Most High.”
on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon

Astronomy was among the learned applications in the antiquity. Edom's
knowledge was held in high esteem (Jeremiah 49:7). But God was more
than capable of humbling them (Chapter 1:4 & 8).

Amos 5:8
Seek Him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow
of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that
calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face
of the earth: The LORD is his name:

We are told that if vintagers came to Edom, they would have been
merciful (Chapter 1:5)....being that they were forbidden to glean
more than once (Deuteronomy 24:21). However this is the Lord's doing..
which is confirmed in the Hebrew word for vintager (botzrim), evoking
the name of Edom's capital, Bozrah. Edom's guilt was in joining force
against Judah (chapter 1:10-15).

Earlier you were asked...Do God hate Esau (Malachi 1:30)?
The scope of the message progressed into a spiritual, futuristic universal view. The isolated ethnic group, Edom, shifts to a paradigm for the nations
The text did not exclude any nation, including Israel, "all" was brought
under condemnation (Chapter 1:15 and Romans 11:32). Confirmation of
Israel (along with Edom) inclusion is read into the following verse sixteen...
that same cup of punishment that they drank previously on the holy Mount would be repetitive (Jeremiah 25:15-29). They were told to drink until "their speech grows thick" (chapter 1:16)....brings us to the notion of
a diminish in the prophetic word..Which is another giveaway, that Israel
was included.

A studied contrast is found (chapter 1:18). The House of Jacob was
forecasted to be fire while the House of Joseph flame (Acts 2:3).The
expectation is to see this fulfillment within the messianic era.

Matthew 3:11
"I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He
will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

This promise from John the Baptist would have given hope to the Jews
of the day. Tradition held that the Holy Spirit departed (along with prophecy)
after the death of the prophets; Haggai,Zechariah, and Malachi.
The day of Pentecost ushered in the return of The Holy Spirit and the
prophetic word (Acts 2:4).

The house of Esau once settled in Seir (Genesis 36:8) which was an
exchangeable term for a goat and was also known as a prince of Hell in
demonology. With that information being known, a better understanding
can be gathered from the text that the house of  {spiritual} Esau shall be straw, burn, and devour (Chapter 1:18).

Matthew 3:12
He is ready to separate the chaff from the wheat with his winnowing
fork. Then he will clean up the threshing area, gathering the wheat
into his barn but burning the chaff {straw} with never-ending fire {devour}."

Matthew 25:31-46 (When reading this..bring to remembrance how Esau treated His brother to get the insightful comparative meaning):

31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with
him, then he will sit on his glorious throne.

32 Before him will be gathered all the nations {There is that all nation again..including Israel}, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep {Spiritual Jacob} from the goats {Spiritual Esau}.

33 And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left.

34 Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed
by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation
of the world.

35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave
me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,

36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I
was in prison and you came to me.’

37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see
you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?

38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and
clothe you?

39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’

40 And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it
to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed,
into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

42 For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you
gave me no drink,

43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not
clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’

44 Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you
hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did
not minister to you?’

45 Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did
not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’

46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous
into eternal life.”

As to be learned from "drink till their speech grows thick" among the
nations (chapter 1:16) a sense of paradox seems to be at play.

Acts 2:

5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of
every nation under heaven.

13 Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.

16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;

17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour
out of my Spirit upon all flesh {not just Israel}: and your sons and
your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams:

18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those
days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:

We know that on Mount Zion shall be survival for some (Chapter 1:17).

Romans 11:
5.So too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace.

26. “The deliverer will come from Zion;
he will turn godlessness away from Jacob (Isaiah 59:20).

Matthew 16:
15“But what about you?” Yeshua asked. “Who do you say I am?”

16. Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living
God."

17. Yeshua replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For this was
not revealed to you by flesh and blood (logic/reasoning/knowledge/human studying), but by My Father in heaven (Revelation/Spiritual insight).

18. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock (Truthful confession)
I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.…
